I watched an interview with Meryl Streep when she was talking about her new film, Lions and Lambs, and she mentioned the issue of the importance to vote. Here, in the USA, you are not required to vote, like you are in Brazil.
The actress suggested that the system should be changed, and goes further by reccomending that there should be some kind of punishment to those that don’t vote such as fines and other things like we have in Brazil. In adition, she suggests that after three times without voting, the person should lose the citizenship and would have to file to get it back, going through the same process immigrants have to.

Do you think that it is a radical approach? Maybe, but the lack of the obligation to vote makes it easy for people not to participate in the election process. Just to have an idea, in the last presidential election (one that has the higher number of people voting at), 64% of the population that could have voted, really voted. And, by the US Census Bureau was a really high number!

I don’t know if the obligation to vote is the best solution. I think that, in many countries, politics and specially, politicians, are seen in a very negative way. But, unfortunately, it is still one of the main tools of democracy, that is, for me, the least worst form of government.
